Compass¶
What is a Compass?¶
A compass is an instrument used for navigation and orientation that shows direction relative to the geographic cardinal directions. Usually, a diagram called a compass rose shows the directions North, South, East, and West on the compass face.
Experiment 1: Basic Navigation¶
Goal¶
To determine the geographic direction of a place using the PSLab app.
Materials Required¶
- Your Phone or Computer
- The PSLab App installed
Procedure¶
- Open the PSLab app.
- Select the Compass instrument.
- Once the compass opens, rotate your device 360 degrees a few times in a figure-eight motion in order to properly calibrate the internal magnetometer.
- Now, rotate your device to face any cardinal direction.
Observations¶
- On rotating the device from one direction to another, the compass dial will rotate to denote the precise direction (N, S, E, W, or Subcardinal directions).
- Alternatively, you may also select axes parallel to the ground like the X-axis, Y-axis, or Z-axis for advanced readings.
- You can record the interaction using the built-in record option present in the top right corner of the instrument.
Experiment 2: Magnetic Field Detection¶
We can conduct an experiment to understand how mobile compasses detect magnetic fields and whether they use physical magnets.
Procedure¶
- Set up a simple circuit with a coiled wire connected to a battery. Turn the switch on so that a current starts flowing through the circuit, inducing a magnetic field.
- Place a traditional magnetic compass near the coiled wire; you will notice a clear deflection.
- Now, place the PSLab Compass near the coiled wire. Depending on the device's specific magnetometer hardware, you may or may not see a deflection.
Conclusion¶
Modern devices use digital magnetometer sensors (like Hall effect sensors) to measure the Earth's magnetic field and provide orientation. This digital integration prevents physical magnets from interfering with other delicate electrical components inside the device.
Experiment 3: Map Navigation with PSLab¶
Objective¶
To learn how to use the PSLab compass alongside a physical map for navigating in an environment.
Magnetic Declination
This basic experiment doesn't consider elements like magnetic declination, which are critical for long-range navigation. Even with a 1-degree variance, you can drift significantly off course over long distances!
Materials Required¶
- Your Phone with the PSLab app installed
- A physical map (or a printed reference map)
- A known initial location and destination
Procedure¶
- Initial setup: Point your initial position and destination on the map and draw a straight line between them. Place your phone vertically on the map.
- Orientation: Orient your entire setup to face North with the help of the PSLab compass. The N on the compass should face the top of your screen, and the angle should read near 0 degrees.
- Knowing the proceeding angle: After ensuring you are correctly oriented North, tilt your phone to align with the line you drew.
- Note down the angle formed (e.g., 270 degrees). This is your bearing.
Tips for Success¶
- Detailed Maps: Always use detailed, high-quality topographic maps when navigating outdoors.
- Landmarks: Look for distinct landmarks (hills, ridges, unique buildings) along your route on the map well before you travel, and use them as visual checkpoints.
